Dr. Amy Catalan is currently teaching in the Division of Professional Education at the University of the
Philippines Visayas. Amy earned a bachelor’s degree in Literature with a minor in Political Science
from De La Salle University. For her undergraduate thesis, “Isang Semiyotikang Pagbasa kina
Ligaya at Perla ng Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag ni Edgardo M. Reyes,” (trans: A Semiotic Reading of
Ligaya and Perla in “On the Nails of Light by Edgardo M. Reyes) she was awarded the best thesis
in Literature. At the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching
with a major in Reading, Language, and Literature, as well as a Doctorate in Applied Linguistics.
She has been in the field of education for almost 30 years, both having experienced teaching in the
Philippines and in the Middle East. Her work has been published in print and online here and
abroad. She also works as a translator from English to Tagalog and Hiligaynon for non-literary (and
eventually literary) materials. She currently runs a blog called Infinite Possibilities. Her most recent
effort is a compilation of recorded poetry, which she wrote and reads on her YouTube channel,
Love and Light. She recently published a research-based article called NO SOCIAL
DISTANCING: Challenges and Collaboration in the Use of Computer-mediated Learning (CML)
Experienced by Selected Master of Education in English as Second Language Students during the Time of
the Coronavirus to highlight the challenges and learnings in computer mediated computation during
the COVID-19 pandemic.
